What are some short-cut key strokes that you find the most useful for MS Word.

Obviously Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V.. but any other than that?

I am amazed that some people don't know the basic shortcut keys - Control V = paste, Control S = Save, and Control X = Cut, but believe it or not, some don't. I have to confess that I didn't know many beyond the basics until I accidentally hit on one of them and decided to discover the rest of the alphabet! So here is your primer in Shortcut ABCs:

A = Select all, B = Bold, C = Cut, D = Font Dialog box, E = Center Alignment, F = Find dialog box, G - Go to... dialog box, H = Replace dialog box, I = Italics, J = Justify alignment, K = Insert Hyperlink, L = Left alignment, M = Margin indent, N = New Blank document, O = Open, P = Print, Q = Bullet, R = Right Alignment, S = Save, T = Tab, U = Underline, V = Paste, W = Exits the document, Y = Repeat the last action, Z = Undo the last thing you did

Now I know my ABCs!!

I definitely like Ctrl-S. Once it becomes habit, you don't have to worry about losing unsaved changes quite as much. – John Galt Oct 12 at 22:59

Ctrl-z Undo last action. Best thing ever

Ctrl-y Repeat last action

This is really useful for loads of things, for example to apply formatting to multiple locations

For quick common formatting:

  • Ctrl-I = Italics
  • Ctrl-B = Bold
  • Ctrl-U = Underline

Others that i use a lot include:

  • Ctrl-Enter = Page Break
  • Ctrl-A = Select all text in the document

All of the above are very useful, I find that the ones I memorize come from functions I use frequently enough to get irritated using the menu.

However, the most useful thing about shortcuts is creating your own! I recorded a macro of Paste Special > Values and assigned a shortcut of Ctrl+Shift+V. Best thing ever! Now I get irritated every time I'm on someone else's computer and it isn't there.

Another useful shortcut key is F4 - this repeats your last action in any MS Office program.
